Well that’s it…the system is ordered.
This old Toshiba notebook has seen much better days. It served me quite well for almost 5 years, and it’s by far the best laptop I’ve owned or used… but it’s pretty much done in after 5 years functioning as my desktop and getting pounded with heavy daily use.
First the [E] key dropped off, then the hard drive had to be replaced. Fortunately, that repair extended the life of the notebook over a year. Unfortunately soon after that the first of three USB ports blew, and the [W], [R], [P], [S] and [L] keys have come off. About 2 months ago the fan went out.
After replacing that (what fun!), another USB port went out. It continued chugging away until a few weeks ago–the new fan started rattling and heat became a problem again. This past week while writing a critical paper the last USB port and the only firewire port went out. Wouldn’t have been a big problem except the paper involved scanning some 37 pages of documents as well. Woops.
Managed to get it done by hooking the scanner to linux server and installing SANE to drive it, but that was basically the last straw. The notebook still works, but I can’t do anything more involved than light web browsing etc. or it starts overheating pretty quickly.
According to the Apple store, I should have a new 20″ iMac by June 6…D-Day.
If anyone has any recommendations for must have apps (especially free or low cost) please let me know. I’m already looking into OSX installations of LaTeX, LAMP, LabPlot and a few other of my favorite *nix apps.

Hi… unorthadox way to get in touch, but I’m trying to get in touch with you about a photo on flickr.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/vinathegreat/28935970/
I want to use it as an illustration on my blog http://www.unmadeup.com
I know you’ve published it under a CC licence.. but I just like to run it past photographers…
If you’re ok with it, do you want to be credited? Linked? I can publish a bio… or would you like to make any comments on the photo itself?
William
Well, that one isn’t one of mine, but I do recall posting a very similar image….
And yes… feel free to use it. Please include a credit line in the article (preferably right under the image as or in a caption). For online a link to the flickr page would be great but not required.
