Johann just reminded me of something that happened a few weeks ago. He was upset with me for not letting him jump in puddles on our outing to run errands. Daddy let him do that. He complained that I made him wear and zip up his raincoat. Daddy didn’t do that. I explained that I didn’t want him wet the whole time we were out. I was also about to go into the Blue Horse to do business with the owner and I didn’t want him looking like a drowned rat dripping on her floor. I finally conceded that he could jump in puddles after all the errands were done and we were on our way home, where we could change clothes not long afterward. That wasn’t good enough.
When Johann asked me again why he couldn’t jump in the puddles NOW, I asked him to humor me. As a mommy, it’s my job to keep him warm, clean, and dry. The following conversation ensued:
(The set up…)
J: “So, it’s your job to keep me warm?”
Me: “Yes.”
J: “And clean?”
Me: “Yes.”
J: “And dry?”
Me: “Yes.”
(The slam dunk…)
J: “So, it’s DADDY’S job to make me wet, cold and dirty?! That’s why HE’S the one who takes me out puddle jumping!!!!”
Me: “Uh, er, no…”
