Johann’s Great White Egret
Originally uploaded by eclectic echoes.
A week or so ago, Johann and I headed out to the hardware store to pick up some PVC pipe so we could make a light tent for shooting Tammy’s booties. We both took our cameras to see if there were some photo opportunities along the way. The hardware store was a bust, but the journey there and back was golden!
First we spotted some great white egrets on an area of marsh. It was high tide and the marsh was flooded. The egrets were hunting through the clumps of marsh grasses for mummichog and other tasty treats. We pulled to the side of the road and got quite a few shots. Eventually a blue heron arrived on the scene, though it stayed pretty far out on the marsh edge. A male kingfisher also visited, perching on the abandoned osprey roost. Up the road at another marsh was a snowy egret prancing along the flooded mosquito ditch. So in one afternoon outing he added the White Egret, Snowy Egret, Blue Heron and kingfisher to his newly started Life Photo Bird List.
Johann’s film card was filled by the time we left the marsh, so he was my spotter when we saw the osprey with it’s striped bass. He was so excited to be buzzed so closely by the osprey that he was literally jumping up and down for all he was worth.
Soon we’ll have to get him his own flickr account.
At the same spot I managed to catch the egret in mid mummichog flip…
Gulp!

Great shots by both of you!
another amazing set of photos. What cameras are you using?
@kate:
Both were shot with Canon dSLR’s. Johann was using a Canon EOS digital Rebel (300D) and I’m using a Canon EOS 1DmII. Our whole family shoots Canon gear, mostly dSLR’s but also the Canon G9 which both my Mom and Dad use and love for a compact carry anywhere camera.
wow. Maybe I’ll save up for the G9, which also has the underwater housing available. I like having the 10x optical zoom on my Fugi s700, but lately I haven’t been as pleased with the speed of the shots as I was with my little fuji f10. I figured the s700 was a steal (I got it less than I paid for the s10 three years ago) but now I just wish I had more camera in a smaller package.
@kate:
Oh wow! I didn’t know the G9 had an underwater housing. Cool.
I’ve heard pretty good things about the Fuji’s. Maybe Mom or Dad will chim in with an opinion on the G9…
Canon has just come out with the G10 which is an upgrade from the G9. It will be interesting to see if the underwater housing fits it as well. (The G10 has a little different shape on the right side to improve the grip–which some of us with the G9 accomplished by purchasing a great little add-on piece with a glue strip to do the sam thing.)
@JimBobTX:
The release of the G10 also means that the G9 should see some price drops on the street!
