Wahoo – Snow!

Weather Forecast - SNOW!

Wahooo! More snow!

Right now it’s coming down pretty good. Started about 45 minutes ago. The forecast is for 5–8″ by tomorrow early afternoon when it will change to freezing rain. Of course right now the extended forecast is for mix of freezing rain and snow through Wednesday, especially at night. Sweet!

Update: February 21st @ 12:10
It still snowing, although the snow is trailing off and turning to freezing rain. It looks like we got about 5″ total. A little dissappointing really, but maybe we can sneak in another couple of inches tonight.

SSN Jimmy Carter

After her successful sea trials the SSN Jimmy Carter will be commissioned this weekend at the Groton Sub Base. (Groton is the “township” we actually live in, although we live in downtown Mystic… go figure!) I remember when former President Carter, his wife and their entourage came last spring for the christening. They stayed here in downtown Mystic and it was sort of funny watching off duty Secret Service agents mixing among the early season tourists in the Mystic Pizza. We have been fortunate to live among a number of the young officers and sailors who have been working on the sub getting her ready and putting her through very successful sea trials (clean sweep!) Congrats guys!

Of course considering President Carter’s later activities passionately promoting peace, many are poking fun at having an attack submarine named after a man who is widely regarded as an ardent dove. What many people do not know, or maybe just not remember, is that he was a submariner (the only President who was) and spent a considerable amount of time in Groton and aboard subs during his naval career. I personally think it’s fitting. Especially as the Jimmy Carter has some features not found on the other two Seawolf class submarines already in service. It’s MMP extension will allow the sub to be used for underwater surveillance and to launch smaller underwater vehicles, a capability that can be used for scientific uses as well as being used in purely military operations.

Belly Button (Round)

Ever get a song stuck in your head?
Have you ever gotten a song from your 4 year old’s collection stuck in your head?

My son was given an excellent book and audio CD for Christmas, and it’s been getting a lot of air time recently. The book is Philadelphia Chickens by Sandra Boynton. It’s an excellent book and album, but for the past several hours I’ve had the song Belly Button (Round) going through my head and I just can’t get it out! Of course it doesn’t help when I remember the visuals I had when I first read this one to my son.

Imagine if you will — a smokey, dimly lit jazz-type café, everyone drinking espresso or cappuccino. A tall thin figure all in black with a barret and sunglasses steps up to the open mic in the corner and starts emotionally reciting -

Belly Button (Round)
So round. So profound. So great to contemplate.
Belly, Belly Button,
You’re oh so fine.
I’m so happy you’re mine.

Abscessive

Damn, that abscessed tooth really hurt!

And of course it happens while we have company, so I’m grumpy and out of it when I should be enjoying myself and their company. Luckily we found a good dentist in the area, who took me at 7:30pm in an emergency visit in the -5°F night.

So good in fact that I didn’t feel the first two shots of novacaine at all. The third was in the roof of my mouth, but tolerable. After that, no pain at all. Just the really strange sensation of a tooth getting wrenched out. Wierd. Really wierd.

No, Really?

It’s official, a 15 year study, researchers have found that fast food makes us fat! Ok it fairness, they did figure out that those who eat fast food regularly weigh on average 10 pounds more and have twice the risk for type 2 diabetes. Still did it really take a 15 year study to figure that out? Maybe a 10 year or 5 year study would have suficed? Or maybe we should do a 50 year study, just to be really sure.

In other news, I don’t really know why, but I have been watching the Amazon Tsunami Relief page periodically — simply amazing! I couldn’t help but think about how the number would skyrocket if my bank (and everyone elses) would match those credit card charges…
