Earthday 2008

At Avery Point the Earthday celebrations were yesterday (tree planting, drum circle, giveaways of CFL lights, recycled reusable water bottles, speeches, ice cream, CT DEP demonstrations, hybrid car showings - not bad for a campus of only 500 or so people.
Since today is the more widely recognized day though… a few quick quotes / links

Caprellids

Ok…if you want to find out what a Caprellid is without the family spin skip to the bottom.
One of the family’s big presents this year was a nice zoom dissecting microscope with a set of 50 metazoan and 50 plant biology classroom slides. Johann and Tammy have been going through a few prepared slides per [...]

Saving the Deep

From Deep Sea News comes a post that is right on time for me. Deep Sea News is a science blog run by a Post-Doc from MBARI, a research assistant from [...]

Journey to the Deep

Jan. 23, 1960: Journey to the Deepest Place on Earth: “Its dive into the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the trench, was made, according to a Navy press release, ‘to demonstrate that the United States possesses the capability for manned exploration of the sea down to the deepest part of its floor.’”

Grey Whales, Red List and Science Communications

Another baseline shift, more species in trouble and more than ever I see the increasing need for effective science communication.
S. Elizabeth Alter, Eric Rynes, and Stephen R. Palumbi have new research with very strong evidence that the grey whale populations of the Pacific were once at least 70,000 individuals strong and likely closer to 96,000 [...]

Intimate School

One thing that is very nice about Avery Point’s Coastal Studies program… it’s very intimate. My class (technically seniors) is very small, a total of 9 people. The class behind ours is not terribly larger with around 14 or so. One could easily have the entire class comfortably show up and sit around chatting after [...]

Can Stuart Come Out and Play “Newton in the Elevator”?

Eric’s Physics class just covered Newton’s Laws of Motion. Eric thought of making it real and fun for Johann by doing the elevator experiment. Eric tested our digital scale, but since it didn’t work, we went to Wal-Mart to buy an analog scale. The next evening after dinner, we all got into the elevator with [...]

Bathroom Science

Bath time is generally a fun time around here, and given that much of my current education is focused on the physics of water and that Johann always wants to know what I have learned…well, bath time often ends up as science time as well. Our poor bathtub is now the scene of many experiments.

Professor Heupel

Several nights ago I was quizzing Eric on his Spanish vocabulary at the table. When it came time for Johann’s bath, I left the room to fill the tub. Johann decided to continue in my place and held up the flash cards for Eric. Johann was very intent on helping Daddy study for his test [...]
